{"id":2290,"date":"2021-02-18T13:34:30","date_gmt":"2021-02-18T13:34:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mitchellcottsgroup.com\/sevenstars\/?p=2290"},"modified":"2023-03-22T13:47:54","modified_gmt":"2023-03-22T13:47:54","slug":"nairobi-airport-seen-ready-to-switch-from-fruit-to-vaccines","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.mitchellcottsgroup.com\/sevenstars\/nairobi-airport-seen-ready-to-switch-from-fruit-to-vaccines\/","title":{"rendered":"Nairobi Airport Seen Ready To Switch From Fruit To Vaccines"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"bt_rc_container\"><p>NAIROBI (Reuters) \u2013 Kenya\u2019s main airport in Nairobi will find it easy to switch from\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/mitchellcottsgroup.com\/kenya\/services\/perishable-handling-services\/\">handling fruit<\/a>\u00a0to importing vaccines because it already has extensive cold storage, a leading logistics executive says.<\/p>\n<p>Farm commodities such as fresh fruit and vegetables, which must be kept cold before being loaded onto planes at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, are among Kenya\u2019s main exports.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe fortunate thing about Jomo Kenyatta is it has the biggest capacity within the East Africa region because of the nature of our trade,\u201d Daniel Tanui, managing director of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/mitchellcottsgroup.com\/kenya\/\">Mitchell Cotts<\/a>, one of the biggest logistics companies in the country, told Reuters.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThose horticulture facilities are refrigerated. It is easy to convert and use for an emergency.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Companies and governments around the world are racing to establish cold-chain storage and delivery systems for vaccines which must be shipped and stored at ultra-cold temperatures and can only be kept in a standard fridge for up to five days.<\/p>\n<p>Mitchell Cotts has applied for international certification by health authorities to handle the imports, Tanui said, adding that it can handle vaccines which need to be kept as cold as -30 degrees.<\/p>\n<p>The company will modify its existing pharma unit at its $25 million facility at the airport, adding extra cabinets to hold the vaccines, and enhancing security.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen we designed this, we did not have in mind that a pandemic like COVID will be there and the number of vaccines that will come,\u201d Tanui said.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/health-coronavirus-africa-logistics\/nairobi-airport-seen-ready-to-switch-from-fruit-to-vaccines-idUSL8N2KN3L1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/health-coronavirus-africa-logistics\/nairobi-airport-seen-ready-to-switch-from-fruit-to-vaccines-idUSL8N2KN3L1<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>NAIROBI (Reuters) \u2013 Kenya\u2019s main airport in Nairobi will find it easy to switch from\u00a0handling fruit\u00a0to importing vaccines because it already has extensive cold storage, a leading logistics executive says.
